Journals are ideal for individual projects as they are a personal space for you to communicate privately with your instructor. Your instructor may ask you to use your journals as a self-reflective tool to post your opinions, ideas, and concerns about the course, or discuss and analyze course related materials. Your instructor will journal assignments that are broad to give you space to reflect on the learning process and document changes in your perceptions and attitudes. You can use the journal space to describe problems faced and how you solved them.
Your instructor may choose to create assignments entries that are more formal in nature and that narrow your writing’s focus by listing topics for discussion. For example, in a creative writing course, the owner of each journal would create entries and an instructor would comment. In this situation, you might be expected to refine a section of a writing assignment over a period of time, using your instructor’s guidance and suggestions. You can also comment on his or her entries to continue the conversation with your instructor.
Your instructor may also choose to make journal entries public, allowing all course members to view all entries. For example, your instructor may choose to make a journal public when asking for opinions on how to improve the evaluation process. In this case, classmates would read each other’s writing and build upon those ideas.
